You can go right to the source. The U.S Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development jointly announce residential construction statistics and make them available on the Census Web page here. You will be able to access the most recently released data (as of today, that would be March 2008), as well as historical data. Most files are available in PDF and Excel format.
